A testimonial from Leon Gidaguyi, DEI Embrace Foundation Volunteer
The local community neglects mental health because of ignorance. Men suffer the most because they feel neglected and burdened with the pressure of providing for their families. I first heard about the DEI Embrace Foundation from my aunt. She told me about the outreaches they do in the community, and I decided to join them as a volunteer. We meet as a group, discuss what we are going through, and offer various forms of support based on the identified needs. As people become more aware of mental health, everyone will become more knowledgeable about the solutions.
During one of our meetings, an older gentleman shared that he had no one to talk to. We advised him to communicate with his wife as women can easily understand a situation and become more hopeful. We told him to share his day and any challenges he encountered and give her hope by using positive phrases like - Today was not good, but tomorrow will be better. Sometimes the family needs hope, not to always be perfect.”
“If a man is not in good mental health, there will be division in the family, as he will not have any affection for his wife and children.”
